The new 2022 Windows update has brought many new changes to its users, including the long-awaited File explorer tabs!

Microsoft just updated its Windows 11 operating system with a ton of new features. They had pledged to implement some of them, while customers had requested others, such as the ability to quickly open the Task Manager by right-clicking on the Taskbar (a feature that was present in other versions of Windows but removed from the 11th)

The biggest change is definitely the inclusion of File explorer tabs. Like with any contemporary web browser, with file explorer tabs you can access many windows simultaneously. You can even pin the ones you use the most!

When we look at the competition of Windows, this feature seems quite late to the party. Since the release of Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks in 2013, Mac computers have supported tabs in the file manager (Finder). However, tabs had long been a feature of many desktop Linux editions and third-party file managers. In 2017, Microsoft experimented with a feature called Sets, which allowed various applications (or multiple windows from the same app) to be combined into a single tabbed window. In 2019, the Sets functionality was abandoned because Microsoft apparently received negative feedback and encountered technical difficulties making it work with Office apps.

Windows 11 may now propose frequently used actions and contacts to share files with, and the deeper OneDrive connection allows you to follow changes and comments across shared files with coworkers. The technology can also identify future dates, allowing you to click to add an event to your calendar or other types of texts like phone numbers or emails. When you click on the text in Windows, you can call using Phone Link, Teams, or Skype.

Other new features in the new Windows 11 update

Although not new to Windows in general, the Taskbar Overflow feature is a wonderful addition to Windows 11 in particular. Now that more apps can be added to the Taskbar, an “overflow” button will allow you to view all pinned apps that are still present.

Even if the files are on your desktop or local storage, sharing them to other devices and apps is now simpler.

Microsoft wants to enhance the Photos app significantly, bringing a better gallery with streamlined browsing, location sorting, and administration. Additionally, a deeper integration for simpler OneDrive backup is planned.

While a wider deployment is anticipated next month along with the security upgrade, the update is accessible for anyone who selected the optional non-security preview release.
